As part of ongoing efforts to improve emergency response during wildfire seasons, the City of La Cañada Flintridge is discussing the implementation of a Red Flag No Parking Program. The Red Flag No Parking Program was designed in response to past fire events, which highlighted the need for clear access of roads during emergencies. As the City is located in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, it’s crucial to have this program in place to safeguard residents to ensure timely evacuations and quick response time of first responders.
What are Red Flag Warnings?
A Red Flag Warning is a term used by fire-weather forecasters to call attention to weather conditions of particular importance that may result in extreme burning conditions.
In Los Angeles County, a Red Flag Warning is issued when sustained winds of 25 mph or greater, and humidity below 15 percent are expected to occur within 24 hours. This notice of Red Flag Warning conditions is provided by the National Weather Service to the Los Angeles County Mountains and Valleys. The National Weather Service provides a California Fire Weather Map which identifies where Red Flag Warnings have been issued.
What is the proposed program?
When a Red Flag Warning is issued, street parking will be restricted in neighborhoods to create adequate space for evacuation and emergency vehicles. Street parking restrictions will be determined by the following parameters:
- Collector streets, regardless of width, are restricted on both sides
- Streets with widths less than 30 feet are restricted on both sides
- Streets with single points of access are restricted on either the ingress or egress side
- Potential evacuation streets that require two-way traffic flow are restricted on either the ingress or egress side
A detailed map of impacted streets can be downloaded here and the draft program will be available after receiving feedback during our community workshops.
How would I know when parking restrictions are in place?
Streets with Red Flag Warning parking restrictions will be identified with street signage year-round. The Red Flag Warnings conditions are generally announced by the National Weather Service through news media. Additional notification methods may include:
- City website’s
- Social media
- Looped message on a dedicated hotline
The City welcomes alternative suggestions on alternative notifications. Provide your suggestions by submitting a public comment or attending one of our three workshops.
WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
Submitting a public comment on the proposed program lets you share your thoughts and help shape decisions that affect our community. Your feedback can influence the proposed program, ensure accountability, and provide valuable perspectives. Public comments help ensure that decisions reflect the needs and interests of the people they affect. Don’t miss the chance to make your voice heard and contribute to a stronger future for all.
Upcoming Workshop Opportunities
The City has scheduled several workshops to encourage public participation and comment. These meetings will offer a platform to discuss the program, emergency preparedness, and provide feedback. Attendance and parking space is limited at these locations, as such all workshops will have an option to join via Zoom. The Zoom Webinar will have a live broadcast and an option to ask questions and provide feedback via chat.
Each workshop will cover the same information, so residents only need to attend one of the three sessions.
