The City of La Cañada Flintridge is launching a new wildfire prevention effort using one of nature’s oldest tools: grazing animals. Thanks to funding from CAL FIRE’s Wildfire Prevention Grant Program, the City will manage vegetation across 58.7 acres of City-owned land in the Gould Canyon area using targeted grazing by goats and sheep.

This project supports the City’s broader wildfire mitigation strategy in coordination with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and focuses on protecting our Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), the area where development meets undeveloped, brush-heavy terrain.

Why Grazing?

Grazing isn’t just good for the goats and sheep; it’s a proven method of reducing wildfire risk by:

  • Removing dry brush and overgrown vegetation
  • Creating defensible space
  • Slowing the spread of fire
  • Boosting soil health through natural fertilization and soil disturbance

This approach is low-impact, eco-friendly and supports long-term vegetation management and community safety.

How You Can Help

While grazing is an important tool, it’s just one part of our community’s wildfire defense system. Here are some simple actions you can take to help protect your home and neighborhood:

  • Clear a 30-foot fire-resistant zone around your home by removing dry leaves, debris and flammable items
  • Prepare a go-bag and stock up on emergency supplies for all members of your household
  • Ensure access to water by having a hose long enough to reach all areas of your property

Together, we can make La Cañada Flintridge more fire-resilient!
